THE FOLLOWING DAY, Annalee and Ewan visited gardens cultivated near an underground spring and a river. The beauty did much to distract her from her current sorrows. She even thought more on partnering with Mr. Vaughn and Mr. Wilton and breeding her longhorns with their angus stock.

She had some references she wanted to check when she got home, but she was leaning toward agreement. She’d go over the process with Peter, her lawyer, and meticulous contracts would have to be drawn up. But she was warming to the idea of doing something different with her stock.

When they returned to the hotel, a gentleman in a three piece suit and flat-crowned hat was standing near the stairs. His face broke into a smile when he laid eyes on Ewan. “Well,” he drawled, “Ewan Judge. How are you, young fella?”

Ewan stuck out his arm and shook hands with the man. “Just fine. Didn’t expect to see you here.”

The gentleman jerked his chin toward the outer doors. “Just come from registering a new brand. Bought the Split Hairs Outfit.”

Surprise shot through Annalee. That spread was not too far from her own. Why had Jim Cook sold?

“Good for you,” Ewan said, but his own tone rang with some hesitancy. He turned to Annalee. “Let me introduce you to Miss Annalee Gillespie, Jack’s daughter. Annalee, this is Buck McCauley.”

Sympathy passed over Mr. McCauley’s face, and he held out his hand for her. As they shook he said, “I was real sorry to hear about your father. Good man. Good, good man. Damn good cattleman.”

“Thank you, sir.” Annalee remembered that Mr. McCauley ran a rather large spread in south Texas. The Two Bar X. And now he’d bought the Split Hairs. Again, Annalee wondered what had made Mr. Cook sell.

“You folks stayin’ the night?” Mr. McCauley asked.

“We are. Leave for Waco in the morning.”

Mr. McCauley’s brow lifted, and he smiled. “Then we could spend supper together, if’n you didn’t have other plans.”

Annalee shared a look with Ewan, and his gaze asked her for acceptance or rejection, and because she was interested in what happened with the Split Hairs outfit, she turned to Mr. McCauley and replied, “That would be fine. Is seven agreeable?” That would give her some time to freshen up.

“That’s mighty fine. Mighty fine.”

She gave Mr. McCauley and Ewan a soft smile. “I’ll see y’all then. I’m going to head to my room to rest.”

Ewan nodded and Mr. McCauley tipped his hat.

As she ascended, she could hear the men’s low tones as they continued their conversation, but she felt Ewan’s gaze on her back. She wasn’t sure why his focus was still on her when he should be giving Mr. McCauley his full attention. Perhaps he was just making sure she made it to the second floor. He was, to a fault, treating her safety and comfort as utmost importance.

Once alone, she gathered the toiletries she needed, then went down the hall to the lavatory. She was going to have a nice soak, take a nap, then have a clear head for her conversation with Mr.
